Summary: The hike is an easy one, but it was well worth the 3 hour drive. The view, amazing, and playing on the rocks is the best! The trail is whellchair accesible, but may tire you out if not careful. The trail named Braille Trail, circles around the rocks, and is especially designed for people with visual and physical disabilities, and was the first of its kind in Missouri. The rocks formed about 1.5 billion years ago from magma, forming the red granite "elephants". So named because the rocks stand end-to-end like a herd of circus elephants. The largest of the rocks, Dumbo, stands 27 feet tall, 35 feet long and 17 feet wide. At a weight of 162 pounds per cubic foot, Dumbo weighs in a 680 tons! This trip is worth the drive from anywhere in Missour! Trailhead: This hike is loocated in Elephant Rocks State Park on Route 21, 5 miles from Belleview. It is accessible from Route 67 to Route 21. But I was still just not impressed with this place. Very boring hike. Loved this place!! Definately recommend it. Do not miss this one. Some other history is here too. Remains of early 20th century quarry are visible (lake). The special pink rock was quarried and used in nearby Saint Louis. Playing on the rocks brings the kid out in everyone! Definitely worth a drive. It's also a great place to picnic. During the early fall, the drive is even nicer, beautiful colors. i grow up in polit knob. my family always comes back.
