Forney Ridge Trail

Highlights:

Challenging ridge hiking beyond Andrews Bald
Near:Gatlinburg, TN
Scenery:
Distance:11.2 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:3628 ft
Hike Time:8 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trailhead is on the left as you start up the paved walkway to the Dome. It quickly drops down and is wet and rocky. At 0.1 our trail veers left as the Bypass Trail goes up to the AT. The trail will continue to drop over more rocks until 1.1 the Forney Creek Trail intersects to the right. From here you will have a gentle climb, as the trail is a little better. At 1.8 mi you will emerge into an opening, which is Andrews Bald. This is a popular hike but after photos and a rest continue down the bald to the right look for trail signs. The trail will switchback into the forest and over the next mile the trail will be rocky and overgrown. The trail will finally find the spine of the ridge which becomes a better trail and easy to hike. There are more photo opps to the left of views of Jerry Bald. The trail ends at the intersection of Springhouse Branch Trail. This will provide a nice lunch spot before returning the same. There will be views of Clingmans Dome on the way up.
Trailhead: From Gatlinburg; 441 South to Newfound Gap (approximately 20 miles), turn right on Clingmans Dome Road (just past Newfound Gap Parking Area). Then 7 miles to Clingmans Dome Parking Area. Trailhead to left of paved walkway that leads to Clingmans Dome Overlook.

*I noted this trail as "poorly maintained trail" which it is a descent trail to the bald but below that there is a 1 mi stretch that is really bad but then it is a better trail along the ridge.
