Beautiful shaded canyon, pine forest, near to pasadena
Near:Sylmar, CA
Scenery:
Distance:7 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1600 ft
Hike Time:4 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a nice, shaded out and back trail in the lower part of the Angeles Crest Highway. I choose this as an easy weekday hike because it is so close to Pasadena. The first part is fairly steep incline but is completely shaded. After that it is more gradual climb up over the saddle and down into grizzlly flats. I never quite understood the significance of this place, but the cool pine grove was a nice place to stop for lunch. After the flats, the trail gets steeper, finally dropping into the Big Tujunga.
Trailhead: Take the Angel crest Highway just past mile marker , park in turn-out on left side of road. The trail is kinda hidden but ascends the ridge behind you. (Lat:34.15 Lon:-118.11)

This trail can be a bit hard to find, though it pretty much follows Tujunga Creek, which it crosses 3 or 4 times. Very picturesque, flat, and shady for the first 2 miles, but becomes very steep on the ascend to Grizzley Flats through heavy chapparal. Nice scenery, quiet area, but can be hard to find. Take 210 fwy west, exit Sunland Ave, to W. Foothill Bl, left on Mt. Gleason to Vogel St., trail is in Stonyvale Picnic Area. (not sure about the directions via Hwy-2 mentioned on this site.)
