Glacier Point to Half Dome via Illilouette Falls

Highlights:

Unmatched views of Yosemite Valley, three waterfalls, mountain vistas
Near:Yosemite National Park, CA
Scenery:
Distance:17 miles
Elevation Gain:4500 ft
Hike Time:9.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Point to Point

Summary: This is the hike in Yosemite. Half Dome is the hike that everyone does, that means that there will be lots of people joining you. However, this a longer, but easier route than the standard trudge up the mist trail and then up, up, up Half Dome.

Starting at Glacier Point, you get the trail all to yourself, see a waterfall, Illilouette, that many do not get to see. Until you reach the John Muir trail, you can enjoy Yosemite and the mountain views in solitude. This is a long hike so be in good shape. Once you reach the falls, you climb and climb and climb some more. Bring lots of water because you will need it. The cables are a piece of cake, and it is fun to pass people going up.

Going down you get to really enjoy the mist trail, if you get some spray after a hot summer day, then you have had a perfect hike. Even the crowds can't detract from this one.

Trailhead: This is a car shuttle hike - so you must park a car in the Valley as well. Happy Isles is your best bet, but Curry Village is alright too. However, you probably won't want to walk to your car when you finish - so park as close to the Mist trail as possible. I've hitchhiked twice to Glacier Point from the Valley successfully, but that's up to you.

Take the 41 to Glacier Point Road and drive east and north 15.5 miles to Glacier Point. Park. Find the Panorama trail to Illilouette Falls and hike south and east until you meet the John Muir Trail to Nevada Falls.

You will probably be by yourself for the first four miles on this hike. I have been on this trail 5 times, hiked to Half Dome and the Valley 3 times and I have never seen another set of hikers until reaching the John Muir Trail. (Lat:37.74473 Lon:-119.53355)

I just read about the existence of a photo-by-photo guide online for soon-to-be Half Dome hikers. I checked it out and thought it was nicely done. It should be an excellent starting point if you're planning to do Half Dome. He calls himself mr.fozzie (funny), but it's quite serious info about hiking Half Dome in Yosemite. I've completed Half Dome in 2002. It was awesome. Like mr.fozzie, I took the Mist/John Muir Trail simply because I wasn't too crazy about hiking UPHILL back to my car after an already-strenuous day. Have fun!

6th time on trail, 4th to the top. Matthew Piazza and I just hiked it on a Saturday. Do yourself a favor and hit this one up during the week. The cables were insanity. We had to go up on the outside or wait thirty minutes just to start in the line. Take a weekday off. I left the old pics, because I still miss my bro Eric.
