Summary: Middle Prong Trail follows an old railroad grade but feels more like a gravel road as the trail winds and follows the Middle Prong. At 2.0 mi look to the right for a spur trail that leads to an open area with the remains of an old Cadillac. After 4.0 mi the trail makes a hard bend to the left a spur trail to the right (not signed) is the trail that leads to Indian Flat Falls. Horses are permitted up to this point but not on this trail to the falls. The falls area offers a great lunch spot and you probably will be the only hikers there that day. This fall is not on a "map" and offers solitude most falls don't during the peak of visitors in the park. The mileage is a little long but truly an easy hike to be enjoyed by most all levels of hikers. Return the same route to your car.
Trailhead: Preferred route: I-40 (Knoxville) to 140 East to 129 South follow signs to 411N/321N then continue on 321N to 73 East and you will enter the GSMNP. I-40 East (Sevierville) exit #407 Hwy 66 to 441 South through Gatlinburg into the GSMNP entrance then right (Sugarlands Visitor Center) on Little River Road then next left to Great Smoky Mtns Institute at Tremont. Continue on the main road, which quickly becomes a gravel road, and follow it for 3.1 miles to a gate and parking circle. The last 3 miles are closed in the winter.
