McMullen Creek Greenway

just an easy urban hike & walk !!
Near:Pineville, NC
Scenery:
Distance:8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:0 ft
Hike Time:3.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a nice urban walk/hike that is perfect for stopping by in the afternoon after work or taking the kids on a Sunday afternoon. The trail is pit gravel for the first 3/4 mile and the remainder is either asphalt or elevated wood decking for over 3 more miles. You'll be sharing the trail with hikers, joggers, walkers and bikers but the wide path allows you plenty of room. There is a small picnic area at the trailhead and "poop-out benches" are plentiful along the trail as well as mileage markers. There are several places to detour down to the creek and I've seen numerous birds and butterflies along the way.
Trailhead: The entrance to the greenway is off hwy#51, Pineville-Matthews Rd. at the bottom of the hill between Park and Johnston Roads. If you are heading east towards Matthews look for the sign on the right side, across from McMullen Creek Market. (Lat:35.05 Lon:-80.51)

This is my wife's favorite trail, since it is paved, boardwalk or leveled throughout the entire distance. I thought its was a very nice place as well, considering that it's in the middle of a suburb. Most of the trail has houses backyards on one side while the other is marsh or woods. My only complaint would be the number of cyclists, but I would imagine if you're riding, you couldn't find a nicer place.

There is a new part of the greenway that is getting ready to open. I just discovered it on March 1st. It is not complete yet so it is difficult to see it on a bike but not a bad hike. Very nice area with much to see. I can't wait for the bridges to be complete.

This is a great place for an enjoyable hike. Its great for good exercise and for seeing nature up close. A club has been formed with the regulars called the McMullen Milers.

This is a great trail. It is so accessible and easy to get to after work or on the weekend. It's a nice getaway. I saw turtles sunning themselves on logs, hawks & of course ducks. I also rode my mountain bike on it and that was a blast. Definitely beats watching out for cars and smelling exhaust! The boardwalks make you feel as if you are somewhere other than Charlotte.
