Summary: This hike starts in the plains of the foothills along townee trail. It then connects to shadow canyon trail and enters a cool wooded canyon. At the top of the canyon a short trail takes you to the top of South Boulder Peak. This peak does not have many visitors, as compared to the other nearby peaks. Trailhead: From Boulder, head south on CO 93 for about 4 miles. Turn west toward Eldorado Springs and travel about 2 miles to the trailhead on the north side (thanks phil). This hike is great - just did it with my dog. It was definitely snowy up top and it's just the beginning of April - so def bring crampons. Steep climb for the last mile or so but great views. Great trip if you are wanting to train for one of Colorado's 14ers. It starts out as a gradual climb that gets tough. Great views from the top. I actually have dont this hike in all seasons. Spring can bring bees along the intersection of shadow canyon and the small creek lays by the small cabin. Snow can lead to ice near the top in the spring. Might consider poles or crampons if you try this one in the winter/spring. Its a non-technical climb at the top. An overall great hike, espicially for a workout. Good View from the top. This trail is a favorite "after work" trail for my dog Kona and I. Its beautiful after spending the day in the office, and its a great workout for both of us! Shadow Canyon "introduced" me to Boulder area hikes. It will always be a special favorite. Very strenuous workout, impressive woods and rock monsters. Final stretch to SB Peak steep but short, mostly out in open. More detailed review: http://www.colorado-hiking.net/page1.html A great hike. Just a note... the trailhead is about 2 miles up the road to Eldorado Springs on the righthand side, not four miles. this is an exceptional early season training hike. excellent view of the majority of the indian peaks/continental divide and the view is even better on Bear Peak, which i strongly recommend you summit on the same trip if possible.
