Summary: This is a very strenuous hike. It is equivelant to a 1 hour stair master workout. There are plenty of places to rest though and look at the great views that this hike has to offer. This is also a geocacher friendly hike. Trailhead: Parking for this hike will be in a wide area along RT22 approx. 1.3 miles west of Mount Union, PA. The trail head will be at the eastern most part of the parking area. There is a sign that will say "Thousand Steps" trail. Perfect place/experience to keep rejuvenating, regrouping your thoughts and finding yourself each time. >^.^< At the half-way point I was wondering why I attempted this hike, but the view was breathtaking. I felt quite the sense of accomplishment upon completion and look forward to my next trip. It was hard for me to believe that my sons actually RUN the Thousand steps not once, but twice as part of their high school soccer pre-season! A VERY nice hike, would definitely do it again! Did it the first weekend March 2008. Recommend start at Link Trail behind Motel 22, ~1 mile west of the 1K-Steps trailhead (orange blazes), as trail along road is surprisingly nice w/many good views. Found steps climb as described: a well-worth it workout. On ascent, steps were increasingly covered with snow and ice, particularly on shaded portions (descent was tricky). Followed Link Trail all the way up mountain to com towers at top. Some amazing views on way there, particularly Clark's View. Also, snow got progressively deeper on ascent, close to a foot deep on slopes near the top - many animal tracks. Overall: awesome hike! Can send photos: jgeracimos@yahoo.com Sara, living in State College, recommends this as one of the areas best hikes for the view of the river, the history.....oh, and she saw a porcupine there...she loves them porcupines. Amazing view on top of the Old Stone Building, great Hike This is very scenic, but eqalally challenge hike. It has Some of the most amazing views I have found anywhere in Pa! A few things no one has mentioned yet. Keep an eye open for fossils on the steps. It is wild to consider that the rocks at the top of this mountain were once underwater! After climbing 1100 feet to the top, I would reccomend exploring a bit before the descent. This give your legs some time to recuperate, and some of the most thrilling views I have found are a bit of the trail. Finnally be on the lookout for snakes! I have spotted a few, including rattles, son bathing on the rocks. here are some pics from the hike: http://galleries.nmax.net/v/shen/Parks_trails/1ksteps Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
