>

Highlights:

A long beautiful hike up to the summit named after the space shuttle Challenger.
Near:Crestone, CO
Scenery:
Distance:13 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:5900 ft
Hike Time:10.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: Follow the signs from the trailhead directing you to Willow Lake. After many switchbacks you will come to Willow Lake (see my report for Willow Lake) stay on the left (North) side of the lake and follow the trail up above the cliffs. The trail will now lead you directly up to the ridge to the South. It is a bit hard to follow for a while, but the key is to stay just to the right (West) of a couloir that also leads directly up to the ridge. When you reach the ridge follow it east to the summit of Challenger Point. A plaque on the summit will let you know you have arrived.
Trailhead: At the south end of the town of Moffat head East on road T into the town of Crestone. Stay on the main road until see a sign on the right directing you toward the Willow Creek trailhead. Turn right on the road following the sign. This road begins paved, however it soon turns to dirt. Follow this road to the end. The road becomes a little rough, however most vehicles could make it to the parking lot. If your vehicle cannot make it, simply pull to the side of the road and walk, it will not add much to your hike. (Lat:37.98902 Lon:-105.66453)
