Hike Time:1.5 hours

HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: From the parking area walk east along the paved trail. After a couple of hundred yards you will see a trail leading off to the left and marked as the trail for Hanging Lake. Take this trail all the way to the lake. The trail is a little steep and rocky, so though it is only 1 mile to the lake it may take you a little time. This canyon is beautiful though, so stop every once in a while to catch your breath and look around. The last 100 yards to the lake is steep up a cliff side with a railing on the outside. Upon reaching the lake you will find a boardwalk, please stay on this board walk as the environment at Hanging Lake is extremely fragile.
Trailhead: Hanging Lake rest area can only be accessed from the East bound lanes of I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. If you're coming from the west you must pass hanging lake, turn around at Grizzly Creek and head back east on I-70 to the Hanging Lake exit. The Hanging Lake exit is nearly 10 miles East of Glenwood springs. After taking the exit for Hanging Lake simply follow the road into the parking area. This area can be crowded during the summer, so you may have to park a ways away. (Lat:39.59302 Lon:-107.18378)

great winter hike - no crowds and beautiful frozen ice formations

This is one of my wife and mine favorties. If you are in shape the hike is no problem. If not, take your time. We do this once a quarter, but, beware. In winter the last 100 yards is extreme. There is a video on You Tube done by an experienced hiker describing it. If you are thinking of doing it in deep snow, you might want to watch the video first. All other times, enjoy. And, yes, to go without seeing Spouting Rock at least once, is not to see Hanging Lake.

The directions are incorrect. If you are 'driving or heading' west then you would pass the trail and come back from Grizzly creek. Not if you are coming from the west, if you are coming from the west you would take the direct Hanging Lake Exit

be sure to see spouting rock. Before you decend, at the end of the boardwalk, turn right and go up the trail about 200 yards - not difficult. You will see spouting rock a hole in the face of the cliff shooting out water. You can walk behind the falls.

Hanging Lake has the most difficult trail I've ever ever been on but it was a wonderful challenge. At the top there is a clear blue lake, it has the best view ever.

Great water falls and the lake is beautiful. Lived here all my life and finally got up there. Get there early! Parking fills up fast, by late morning the lot is full in Summer. Take some hiking sticks, big help to me coming down. Trail is steep, you'll get a good workout! Just hiked the Kalaulau trail on Kauai, that 1st mile is easier than this!

Just beautiful.

It took 3 hours round trip with just a few mins at the lake, great hike but technical for beginning hikers. Wear really good shoes!
