Ringing the Maroon Bells

>

Highlights:

A world class loop hike, but as deadly as it is beautiful.
Near:Aspen, CO
Scenery:
Distance:8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:4600 ft
Hike Time:7 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Loop

Summary: Start by hiking the Maroon Peak trail (detailed as a seperate hike). From the summit of Maroon Peak descend Northeast along the ridge and deal with downclimbing three steps to get to the saddle. From the saddle you will immediately take on a challenging head wall, stay on its left side and exit early before reaching the ridge again. Traverse on the left until the cairns lead you to the second head wall. Attack this headwall head on. Be careful as the terrain can get to class 5 here. Once beyond this obstacle the difficulty eases and you can just follow the ridge over to a small saddle just below North Maroon. Leave the ridge to the left and ascend up to North Maroon's West ridge and take it to the summit. Follow the North Maroon trail (detailed as a seperate hike) back to the trailhead. This hike usually takes 12 to 13 hours.
Trailhead: The trail head is easily accessed from Aspen. From the round-about on the West end of Aspen on Highway 82 take Maroon Lake road to its end at the trailhead. The trail is paved all the way. If you arrive after 7 am there is a $10 fee to drive the road. If you arrive after 9 am you must take the bus. This hike requires a lot of time to complete before the afternoon storms roll in, so I suggest a 4 am departure from the trailhead.
