Summary: From parking lot look for the trailhead sign on the north side. Follow this heavily traveled trail. After hiking for 1.25 miles there will be a sign on the right side of the trail at an intersection. Turn right at this sign towards Mt. Yale. From here simply stay on the easy to follow trail as it takes you the rest of the way to the summit. There is a steep section just short of the final ridge that has many trails on it, however the most stable trail seems to be on the left side. Once you reach the ridge you will follow it to the summit. This is the most difficult part of the trail however if you stay on the right (North) side of the ridge it doesn't get too bad. Trailhead: In the town of Buena Vista there is one stoplight. From this stoplight head west on Highway 306. Take this road for 4.75 miles where you will see a parking lot on the right side of the highway. This is the trailhead. This is an excellent trailhead for those without high clearance vehicles as the road and parking lot are all paved. We did this with our 12 year old daughter and 10 year old son. The daughter made the peak and the son did not (but he got very close). One correction to the directions: You need to take Hwy 306 about 12 miles from the stoplight (not 4.75) and the parking area is labeled "Denny Creek." our trip was very interesting, we hiked for a good 4 hours taking various stops for the girls that were with us. we made it close to the tree line where we lost the trail because of the waist deep snow! ut we kept on going and it got to where we climbing on our hands and knees, but once we got to the top, a 7&1/2 hour trip, it was the most amazing thing i've ever seen and the hardest hike i've had to do. DO IT IT IS AWESOME!!!! First 14er for me. The trail is simple to follow and the views are breathtaking. If you take your time across the ridge at the top it's not bad at all. I started before sunrise and had the trail to myself, but it did seem to get much more crowded when I was descending and as the day progressed. Great trail. Just attempted this hike with a group of 7 highschool students (through Noah's Ark Whitewater Rafting Co. - www.noahsark.com). Unfortunately, we did not peak. We got to about 13,200 ft. and had to turn back. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
