Pyramid Peak

>

Highlights:

One of Colorados most dangerous fouteeners, thrilling summit.
Near:Aspen, CO
Scenery:
Distance:7 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:4500 ft
Hike Time:6.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: Hike West from the trailhead following the signs for Crater Lake trail. When the trail finally levels of (sort of) and goes through a rocky ravine, keep your eye out for a trail to the Left. This trail isn't very obvious so look hard. Follow this trail as it leads you directly toward Pyramid Peak. When you reach where the trail begins its switchbacks you have come 1/3rd of the distance but still have nearly 90% of your elevation left to go. The trail will ascend rapidly up to the cirque beneath Pyramid. The trail disappears here as you will be crossing giant boulder fields. Continue directly towards Pyramid until you nearly reach its vertical North face, then look left for a trail that ascends a steep gully to the ridge. From the saddle the cairns do a pretty good job of marking the trail here. Stay near the ridge, but usually on the left side. The climbing and scrambling gets loose and dangerous so take your time. The summit isn't far.
Trailhead: From the rotary intersection on the West end of Aspen take Maroon Creek road up to the parking lot at the end this is the trailhead. If you go before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. there is no fee. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. there is a $15 fee per car. From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. cars are not allowed unless you are an overnight camper. During those times you must ride a bus from Aspen.
