Summary: Follow this trail along Fourmile creek all the way up to the Crags. The trail is well traveled and easy to follow. At about the 3/4 of a mile mark there is an alternative trail that heads off to the left. This trail will also take you to the Crags, just the southern end of them. As the trail nears the crags you will see lots of large rock formations. The last part of this trail gains a lot of elevation, but it's worth it since the views from the top are wonderful. No rock climbing is required to get here, but the opportunity is definitely there for those who wish to do so. Trailhead: To reach the trailhead take highway 24 to Divide CO. At Divide head south on highway 67 for 4.3 miles. Take a left on the road that has a sign for the Crags Campground. Follow this road to the Crags Campground. Turn left into the campground and follow it to the end where you will find a parking lot and a sign for the Crags trail. I saw all kinds of old sites and even climbed up and got on the tondra above tree level on Pikes Peak. Warning, watch out for sudden storms. They will make you go back down in a hurry. Good luck and God bless. The drive in wasn't one of my favorites as the dirt road became very narrow and spent a lot of time maneuvering around huge holes. What a fantastic hike though! It is an easier hike but was incredibly scenic and we thoroughly enjoyed the ability to stop and take in the great sights. The ascend to the top was slightly tricky but couldn't believe the sight at the top. From the views of Catamount Reservoir to the snow covered mountain range in the distance, it was an incredible experience. I plan to visit again and again. Hope to make it next year before the leaves fall from the trees. Directions above are no longer accurate. The road that the trail head is on has been extended past the Crags. If you reach the end of the road, you've gone too far. Look for the entrance to your left. There is a sign, but there are many trees around it, making it difficult to see. excellent hike. plenty for the kids to do along the way.(climb on huge rock formations, play in stream)last 1/4 mile moderate climb. not bad if you are used to the altitude, but we made it(and we're from Iowa).views from the top are unparalleled. swarms of lady bugs at the top. not sure why, but kind of irritating. loose sand near and around the top so be careful and watch your footing going back down. three out of four in our party ended up on their backside. i would certainly recommend this hike to anyone. We saw people of all ages. Great camping spots along the way to trailhead also.very nice family hike! This is a very strenuous hike, especially near the end, but the view from the summit is worth every aching muscle. Definately not for someone who is not acclimated to the altitude. Take it slow, drink plenty of water and enjoy your reward at the end!!! Great first time trip. First day on snowshoes and hiking with our Siberian Husky, Koda. Snow on trail was well packed. Used snowshoes up and down just to get the exercise and enjoy the moment. Great trail with enough to keep it fun without making it difficult. Views are amazing. Trail is certainly worth doing again and again. Hiked for the first time today (13 Dec 2008). Trail conditions: packed snow, but a few spots were bare. Weather: Mostly overcast, temp ~ 32F at TH. Breezy in open areas, ~ 50-55 mph at the Crags. Report: This was my first time on this trail. Took my Siberian Husky "Jack". Had a great time. Used snowshoes on the way up (mostly to get my snow legs back), but took them off for the trip back down and was just fine. The trail was easy to follow, fairly easy most of the way (except for the last 1/4 mile or so to the Crags. The views ARE spectacular and worth the hike. Not an especially long hike, but the altitude and push at the end are a good workout. Take the road all the way to the trailhead to legally skip the day-use fee. This was a very nice hike and would have been even nicer but all the leaves had already fallen from the aspen trees! Makes for a wonderful autumn hike. Once you leave from the trailhead to start your hike we accidently veered to the right there were 2 trail signs with numbers, just stay to the right & you will hike up a steep incline & you will then see a sign that says "The Crags". A gradual incline for awhile & the last part is steep, but so worth it when you get to the top! Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
