Summary: From the closure gate continue hiking along the road. Even though the trip is short and the road is not too steep you will be hiking at a high elevation so take your time. The Dauntless mine will come into view very soon after you start the hike. There are many buildings left on the surrounding hillsides from the glory days of this mine. The road will lead directly to the Dauntless mine and you will be able to walk around these structures. This is on private property though, so respect the fact that permission has been given for the public to access this area. Do not take anything or damage any of the historical features. Look around though there are lots of little remaining items that tell a lot about how the miners lived and worked. Trailhead: From the town of Fairplay head south on Highway 285. After one mile you will pass the intersection with Colorado 9 and begin to go up a hill. About 3/4 of the way up this hill there is a road on the right. Turn onto that road. This road will take you the rest of the way to the trailhead. The road gets progressively worse as you go. Any car can make it at least to the old townsite of Leavick (You will see a large building on the right side of the road). After the town of Leavick there are several spots with parking when you decide you've gone far enough (marked by yellow diamonds on the map). The road ends at a closure gate and you must start hiking from there.
