Summary: This is a smaller version of the Methuselah hike. It is better suited for children and the elderly who want to enjoy nature's treasures.

This is a hike among the ancients. It gives you something to think about when you are hiking among things that have been alive before the Greeks ever dreamed of Philosophy, before the Hebrews set the Old Testament in Writing, and the pyramids were still relatively new buildings.

The gnarled and wind scarred husks of the trees are bizarre in shape and form. These trees actually continue to live long after parts of them have died off. The oldest are often very large, with dried-out burnt sculpted trunks and branches coming out of the top.

The hike itself is very well laid out, portions are a little steep, but should pose no problem to anyone with any amount of mobility. There are also interpretive signs along the trail that point out interesting things about the trees.

Trailhead: Take the 395 North to Big Pine. Turn right onto the 168, you will follow the road as it dips and turns almost to Westgard Pass. If you reach the pass, you have gone too far.

Turn left onto forest road 4501, you will see signs for Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, White Mountain and Grandview campgroup. Follow the road until you come to a turnout for Schulman Grove, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Visitor Center.

The road is closed during winter and is not plowed. (Lat:37.38555 Lon:-118.17865)
