Begin by heading north from the parking area on the old carriage road to Dacy clearing (this section is driveable by 4WD high-clearance vehicles).
When you reach the clearing, turn right passing through a gate. Soon you recach an intersection with a large rock. Head right to make a counter-clockwise loop. You climb a series of switchbacks and finally reach a fork near the summit.
After enjoying the views, return to the fork and bear left to complete the loop. You will descend another series of switchbacks before reach Bumps pond. Continue following the trail around the pond. The trail descends again, passing several lookouts before you complete the loop. Return the same route to Dacy clearing and finally the parking area.

Hiked it yesterday. Beautiful day. Going from the HogTown trailhead, you'll pass the ruins of what looks like an old house. We ascended on the sleeping beauty trail to the right at Dacy Clearing. A bit rocky for a while. The ascent wasn't bad but it did get tiresome in the last 1/4 mi. The views at the top were spectacular. Great spots to picnic and take in the scenery. On the way back we took Fishbrook Pond trail. Well worth it. The views of the pond & the mountain were very pretty. GPS read 8.84mi at end of trip. Take the roadway if its open though & save yourself 3.2mi.

Went in late July on a mostly sunny day. Took the long way around by Bumps pond. Outstanding hike, full of nature and serenity. Make sure you drive a vehicle capable of making the trek from Hog Run to the clearing, made our day a lot more enjoyable. Views were amazing from the summit, and lots of relaxing lounging rocks for photography and to have a snack with soft breezes.

Outstanding hike. 2nd time up the mountain, this time my wife came. The view of Lake George was spectacular. We were able to drive our minivan from the Hog Town parking area all the way to the Dacy clearing. We then drove down towards Shelving Rock and went swimming in a little cove on Lake George. Absolutely fun!!

Hiked to the SB summit yesterday with my stepson (12 yo). We parked at Hog Town and walked in the 1.5 mi to Dacy Clearing. A SUV or truck would be ideal, but in hindsight a car could navigate this road (when dry) too. Next time, I'll save the extra 3 miles RT from the Hog Town lot and do the approx. 7 mi SB summit/Bumps Pond loop instead. A day trip just to the summit from Dacy is 3.6 mi RT and WELL worth it for the views! Easy/moderate hike with good trail markers. It took us 4.5 hrs to do the 6.6 mi RT making plenty of stops for pics/quick breaks and about 40 minutes to take in the summit. Great day hike.

Hiked the trail second week of December, the weather wasn't really desirable due to a misty rain and fog. While climbing the trail, the trail was rocky and mostly covered with running water down hill, but challenging. When we reached the summit, visibility was bad, so we didn't get to appreciate the full view. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was getting close to setting when we reached Bumps pond. Would definitely recommend it to experienced hikers though.

This was the first "real hike" I took with my wife and two young boys. We took this hike in August of 2010. A little difficult for a person who has never hiked before, but if you take your time it is well worth it when you reach the summit. An experience my family and I will never forget.
